Refining JIra

Jira (GreenHopper) Refinements

We're using Jira - mostly Greenhopper - to visualise our pre-board backlog.

This is what it looks like:

Our Greenhopper View

There are a few things worth mentioning:
  1. We don't include "development bugs" on the board (see week 1)
  2. We use highlights in Greenhopper to grey out things that are on the board. This helps when we're choosing items to add to the board
  3. We use sub-tasks to track detailed work in some cases
  4. Sub-tasks don't go on the board
It looks like some of our restrictions on Jira types could be lifted soon, so we will be able to more accurately represent the 4 types of work we actually differentiate (at the moment we are limited due to shared infrastructure).

In practice, we're only interested in:
  • Project
  • Improvement
  • Production bug
  • Development bug
While there's no practical difference between an "improvement" and a "production bug", I'm finding it's pointless arguing the toss.  For now, we log them separately, but Production Bugs get prioritised the same way as an improvement.   Only Development Bugs get special treatment (and they don't generally go on the board).

.. ( transmission ends ) ..
